WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team will look to set a new program record for ACC wins in a single season when it travels to Virginia and Virginia Tech this weekend. The Demon Deacons will face the Cavaliers Friday at 7 p.m. and then square off against the Hokies the following evening at 6 p.m.
Wake Forest is 10-8 in the ACC this fall, which ties the program record for conference wins in a season. The Deacons went 10-12 in conference play a year ago and were 10-6 in the ACC four times prior (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003).
The Demon Deacons are 14-13 overall entering their match at Virginia on Friday. Wake is coming off a weekend split at Boston College and Maryland. The Deacs fell in five games to the Eagles on Friday but then rebounded for a four-game victory over the Terps on Sunday.
The win over Maryland gave Wake a season sweep of the Terrapins for the first time since the 2001 season. The Deacons have swept three ACC teams this season: North Carolina, NC State and Maryland.
Wake Forest is looking to make it five with its two matches this coming weekend. The Deacs defeated both Virginia and Virginia Tech at home earlier this fall.
Virginia (21-6, 14-4) enters its Thursday showdown with Duke riding an eight-match winning streak. UVa is in second place in the conference, three games back of the 17-1 Blue Devils.
Friday's match will be the 31st meeting all-time between Wake Forest and Virginia. The Demon Deacons evened the series at 15-15 with a three-game sweep of the Cavaliers on Oct. 7. The win snapped a four-match losing streak to Virginia.
Virginia Tech (15-12, 9-9) enters its match with Duke on Friday having lost three of four. The Hokies had won four of five matches prior to the losing stretch. Virginia Tech is just one game back of Wake Forest in the ACC standings.
Saturday's match will be the 27th all-time meeting between Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. The Hokies lead the series by a 18-8 margin, but the Demon Deacons have two straight and three of the last four over the Virginia Tech. Wake earned a five-game comeback win over the Hokies earlier this year on Oct. 6.
The Deacs wrap up their regular season with a pair of home matches next week. Wake Forest will host Florida State on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. and then Miami the following day at 7 p.m. The Deacons will be looking to avenge losses to both teams from earlier this fall.
