CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest's bid for a school-record 11 ACC wins came up just short, as Virginia took down the Demon Deacons in four games Friday evening at Memorial Gym. The Cavaliers defeated the Deacs 30-18, 25-30, 30-22, 30-19.
The loss drops Wake to 14-14 overall and 10-9 in the ACC. Virginia moves to 22-7 overall and 15-5 in the conference.
Sophomore Jessica Furlong led the Deacons with a match-high 17 kills, while senior Lauren Peterson was right behind with 15. Junior Jackie Lucas joined the two in double figures with 10 kills on the night.
Lucas also added a team-best six blocks, while Peterson and sophomore Natalie Mullikin chipped in five blocks apiece.
Senior Natasha Schaefer led all players with 17 digs in the match. Fellow senior Jenna Doane recorded nine digs, while freshman Sara Uniacke finished with seven.
Freshman setter Dylan Faulkner dished out 44 assists on the night.
Virginia broke open a close game one with a 7-0 run midway through the contest. Holding a 15-12 lead, the Cavaliers scored seven unanswered points to go up by 10, 22-12. UVa then held on for the 30-18 opening-game win.
Wake Forest turned the tables in game two, pulling away late for the win. With the Deacs clinging to a 21-20 lead, Wake Forest went on a 7-1 run to take control of the contest. Virginia made a late charge but couldn't get any closer than four, as the Deacons came away with a 30-25 win.
In game three, Virginia broke a 19-19 tie with an 8-2 run to go up 27-21. In all, the Cavaliers closed the game on an 11-3 run to win 30-22.
UVa never trailed in game four, doubling up Wake 14-7 to start the game. Virginia continued to build its lead, as it went up 21-10 and eventually came away with a 30-19 win.
With the win, Virginia was able to avenge a three-game sweep at the hands of Wake Forest earlier this season.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. The Demon Deacons will be looking for a season sweep of the Hokies.
