Starting Notes...
Senior offensive Steve Vallos started his 45th career game for the Deacons. Riley Skinner made his 10th career strart. Wake Forest now has 29 players on the active roster with at least 10 career starts, including 14 on defense, 14 on offense and one specialist.
Deacons Fall Behind Early...
Wake Forest failed to score the first points of the game for the first time since Clemson visited Groves Stadium on Oct. 7, a span of four games. The Deacons entered tonight's game 1-1 when the opponent scored first.
Wake Forest Trails After First Quarter...
The Deacons trailed after the first quarter for only the second time this season (3-0 vs. Duke).
Gattis Gets Fifth Pick of the Season...
Senior FS Josh Gattis intercepted Eddie Royal's wide receiver pass in the second quarter. It was his fifth pick of the year and 12th of his career. Gattis also has six career fumble recoveries and five career forced fumbles.
Thompson Bangs Up Shoulder...
Junior DE Jeremy Thompson injured his shoulder during the first half and did not return.
Down At Halftime...
Wake Forest trailed at halftime for only the second time this season (7-3). The Deacons were blanked vs. Duke 10-0 in the second week of the year, but rallied to win 14-13.
Tonight's Attendance...
The third-largest crowd in Groves Stadium history -- 36,723 -- saw the Deacons and Hokies square off. It was the largest since Nov. 13, 2004 when 37,623 witnessed the Wake Forest-North Carolina game. For that 2004 contest, temporary bleachers were constructed in front of Bridger Field House.
Attendance Record Falls...
Consequently, the season average attendance fell. The Deacons drew 195,091 in six games, an average of 32,515.
Swank 2-for-2...
Sophomore PK Sam Swank made both of his field goals to improve to 17-for-23 for the year, including 5-for-7 from beyond 50 yards.
VT Scores On Defense...
Xavier Adibi's fumble recovery for a touchdown marked the first true defensive touchdown by a Deacon opponent this season. Clemson's Gaines Adams scored on a fumble recovery, but the score came on special teams.
Stuffed In The Redzone...
Wake Forest was stopped in the red zone in the fourth quarter, trailing 20-6. It was only the third time this season the Deacons have failed to score in the red zone (now 27-of-30) and the first time since the Clemson game.
