Demon Deacons Try To Rebound Saturday Against Georgia's Bulldogs At 5:10 p.m.
Wake Forest, coming off a lopsided 36-point loss at Air Force, returns to the friendly confines of Lawrence Joel Coliseum Saturday to host Georgia (5:10 p.m./webcast).
The Demon Deacons, 5-1, saw a 7-0 lead at Air Force quickly disappear Wednesday night in a 94-58 loss to the Falcons in Colorado Springs, Colo. Wake Forest shot just 36.7 percent while Air Force shot 60 percent and the Falcons made 11-of-23 three-point field goals.
Wake Forest returned to campus early Thursday morning after suffering the most lopsided loss in Skip Prosser's six years as the Deacon head coach.
Georgia, 4-1, has not played since a Nov. 24 80-36 thrashing of visiting Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs, who will be playing their first road game of the season, are averaging 90.8 points per game.
The Bulldogs have been led in the early going by sophomore guard Mike Mercer (18.0 ppg) and junior forward Takais Brown (17.3 ppg). Ten different Georgia players average at least five points per game.
Saturday's meeting is the first between Wake Forest and Georgia since a 75-57 Deacon victory in Joel Coliseum on Dec. 16, 2000.
Saturday's Game Has Scoring Potential
Wake Forest and Georgia both prefer an up-tempo pace, which could make for an entertaining game Saturday.
The Deacons have scored at least 88 points in three of their six games. The Bulldogs are averaging more than 90 points per contest and have gone over 100 points twice.
Georgia is shooting a sizzling 53.3 percent. Wake Forest opponents are shooting 46.3 percent, a statistic that ballooned after Air Force shot 60 percent against the Deacons Wednesday night.
Two other Georgia statistics jump off the page. The `Dawgs are out-rebounding opponents by 12 boards per game and they are recording nearly 13 steals per contest.
A Triple-Header At Joel Coliseum
Saturday's ACC Football Championship game between Wake Forest and Georgia Tech will be shown on the video board at Lawrence Joel Coliseum prior to the Demon Deacons' basketball game against Georgia.
Doors to the coliseum will open no later than 12:30 p.m. The football game, televised by ABC, begins at 1 p.m. At 5:10 p.m., Wake Forest and Georgia play in a key non-conference basketball tilt. Approximately 30 minutes after the Wake-Georgia game, the Wake Forest women's basketball team hosts Charleston Southern.
The video board will be lowered for optimal viewing of the football game as Wake Forest seeks its first ACC title since 1970. Parking lots, concession stands and restrooms will all be operational. Seating for viewing the football game will be general admission. Once the football game is over, fans will relocate to the seat printed on their ticket.
Admission to watch the football game is free to those who already have tickets to the WFU-Georgia basketball game. Wake Forest students receive free admission by showing their student identification. Tickets to watch the football game and both basketball games can be purchased for just $10 at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum box office, or by calling 336-725-5636, extension 350.
