WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Fresh off winning a share of the ACC regular season championship, the Wake Forest men's soccer team received the second seed for the 2006 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. The pairings for the field of 48 were announced this afternoon by the NCAA. The berth marks the sixth consecutive appearance and the 11th overall for the Deacons.
Having received a first-round bye, Wake Forest (15-3-3) will host the winner of the Hofstra-Providence matchup in the second round of the tournament at Spry Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. The Deacs have never met either team.
Seven of the nine men's soccer-playing ACC institutions received bids into the tournament. Duke, who defeated Wake on Sunday in the ACC championship game, received the top overall seed while Virginia and Maryland received the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively. Clemson, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech were the other ACC schools to make it in the tournament.
The 2006 Demon Deacons are just one win shy of breaking the all-time school record for victories in a season. The Deacs are led by seniors Steven Curfman and Wells Thompson who share the team lead with 14 points each as well as a defense that has recorded a school-record 12 shutouts.
