DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Jessica Furlong posted her fifth straight double-double, but it was not enough as Wake Forest fell in three games to Duke Tuesday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils defeated the Demon Deacons 30-14, 36-34, 30-23.
The loss snaps Wake's two-match winning streak and moves the Deacons to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in the ACC. Duke moves to 22-3 overall and 15-1 in the conference.
Furlong, who was recently named ACC Volleyball Co-Player of the Week, led Wake Forest with 14 kills and was second on the squad with 13 digs.
Senior Natasha Schaefer tallied a team-high 15 digs, while freshmen Abby Miller and Sara Uniacke each had eight digs in the match.
Junior Jackie Lucas hit .500 for the match, totaling eight kills with no errors in 16 attempts. Lucas also added three blocks.
Sophomore Natalie Mullikin chipped in four block assists, while sophomore Ashley Homitz contributed three blocks.
Freshman Dylan Faulkner dished out 36 assists and registered three total blocks, including a block solo.
After quickly falling a game down after dropping the opening set 30-14, Wake Forest came close to evening the match in game two.
The two teams battled closely throughout the contest with neither gaining more than a three-point advantage. The Deacs led late 28-27, but Duke came back to take four of the next five points to go up 30-29.
Wake overcame the game point on a kill by Mullikin and then two points later made it through another game point on a kill from Furlong.
A second straight kill from Furlong gave the Deacons their own game point at 32-31, but after a Duke timeout the Blue Devils scored two straight to take a 33-32 lead.
Back-to-back kills from Furlong again allowed Wake Forest to hold game point, this time at 34-33. However, three straight kills from Rachael Moss gave Duke the 36-34 victory and a two-game lead in the match.
The Blue Devils never trailed in game three, as they cruised to the 30-23 win to earn a sweep of the Deacs.
The loss was the second time this season that Wake Forest has been swept at the hands of Duke.
The Demon Deacons will look to get back on the winning track as they head north to face Boston College and Maryland this weekend. Wake will take on BC on Friday at 8 p.m. and then face Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m. The Deacs are in the middle of a stretch where they play five straight matches away from Reynolds Gymnasium.
