Deirdre Naughton Named ACC Rookie of the Week

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Deirdre Naughton put up more than 20 points per game in helping the Demon Deacons split a pair of ACC games this week, earning league Rookie of the Week accolades, as announced by the conference office, Monday. Naughton becomes the first Wake Forest player since Meredith Bell in 2001-02 to earn the honor.
For the week, Naughton averaged 21 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, and shot 10-for-25 from the field (40 percent). Naughton was 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range, and was 15-for-16 (93.8) percent from the free throw line. She also played an average of 38 minutes per game.
Naughton scored at least 20 points in back-to-back games this week, posting a team-high 22 against NC State on Thursday and 20 against Clemson on Sunday. Against the Wolfpack, the freshman was 5-for-10 from the field and made 10-of-11 free throw attempts as the Demon Deacons dropped the league contest, 73-60. Naughton was 2-for-6 from 3-point range, and gathered two rebounds to go with two assists and one steal.
Against the Tigers on Sunday, the Winnetka, Ill. product had a solid all-around game, pulling down seven rebounds and passing out six assists to go with her 20 points. She was 5-for-15 from the field, with all of her makes coming from beyond the arc, and hit all five of her free throw attempts. Naughton's five triples helped Wake Forest set a new ACC record with 16 3-pointers, and helped the Deacons snap a six-game losing streak.
