WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team has announced its 2006-07 schedule, which features a total of 28 games. The Demon Deacons will play 18 of their 28 games at home in Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Wake Forest will play 14 non-conference games and 14 Atlantic Coast Conference games. Eleven of the Deacs' non-conference games will be played at home. Wake Forest will play eight games against 2006 NCAA Tournament participants.
In addition, the Deacs will appear in two televised contests, Jan. 5 at home against Clemson and Jan. 14 at NC State.
The Demon Deacons will open the season against Indiana at the Women's Sports Foundation Classic on Nov. 10 in Lexington, Ky. The Deacs will face either Kentucky or Washington State two days later to wrap up the tournament.
Wake will play its home opener Nov. 14 against Western Carolina, marking the 20th all-time meeting between the in-state rivals.
The Deacs will play five non-conference home games during the month of November, including dates with High Point (Nov. 17), Wofford (Nov. 22), Florida A&M (Nov. 24) and Towson (Nov. 29).
The month of December sees Wake hosting non-conference foes Charleston Southern (Dec. 2), Winthrop (Dec. 17), James Madison (Dec. 21) and Richmond (Dec. 30).
The Deacons will also play their lone non-conference road game in December when they travel to Wright State on Dec. 14.
Wake Forest will play two non-conference games during the new year, as it hosts UNC-Asheville on Jan. 8 and Winston Salem State on Jan. 26. The game with Winston-Salem State will be the first official meeting of the two schools since the 1980-81 season.
Of their non-conference opponents, the Demon Deacons have never faced Charleston Southern, Indiana, James Madison, Towson, Washington State, Wofford and Wright State.
"With having such a young team this year, we need to mature during the non-conference schedule," said Demon Deacon head coach Mike Petersen. "Having so many non-conference home games will allow our young players to hopefully get comfortable playing in our home arena."
Wake Forest will begin ACC play Jan. 2 at Virginia Tech. The Deacs will play Virginia Tech, Clemson and NC State twice during the regular season.
The Deacs will host conference opponents Clemson (Jan. 4), Virginia Tech (Jan. 18), Georgia Tech (Jan. 28), NC State (Feb. 1), Duke (Feb. 11), Boston College (Feb. 18) and Florida State (Feb. 25).
Wake's conference road schedule is highlighted by a trip to defending NCAA champion Maryland on Jan. 21. The Demon Deacons will also make trips to Virginia (Jan. 11), NC State (Jan. 14), Miami (Feb. 8), Clemson (Feb. 15) and North Carolina (Feb. 22).
The ACC Tournament is schedule for Mar. 1-4 in Greensboro.
"We're very excited about the schedule we play this year," said Petersen. "The ACC conference schedule will test us against the best teams in the country. Because of the strength of our conference, we have to be ready to compete every single night."
