Today's Practice (#3): Helmets, shoulder pads and shorts.
Weather: 82 degrees and humid.
ractice Notes: During positional group work receivers ran routes, catching tennis balls thrown by wide receivers coach Tim Billings ... During special teams kickoff drills, redshirt sophomore Sam Swank was regularly booting his kicks into the end zone ... The coaching staff from NCAA Division III Averett University was on hand to observe this evening's practice.
Snapshot: Defensive tackle Jamil Smith is looking to make an impact in his fifth and final season on campus. The redshirt senior played mostly on special teams and in a reserve role the past three seasons. But, after having what the coaching staff describes as the best spring performance out of anyone, Smith is expected to be the Demon Deacons starting nose guard on Sept. 2.
The Black Mountain, N.C. native attributes his strong spring play to his teammates and his coaches, both for inspiring him and helping him to strive for the best, as well as support from his family.
Now that the fall is in full swing, Smith is ready to translate his success at practice into success on Saturdays.
"I feel like the fall is going well," said Smith. "I'm out here trying to prepare my segment and help everybody get ready to play on Saturday. I'm looking forward to hitting somebody in another color jersey, though."
Injury Report: DE Matt Robinson (knee) was the only player not practicing today. QB Zach MacDowall (ankle) and DE Zach Stukes (knee) were back on the field after sitting out Friday's practice.
Next Practice: Tuesday, 7 p.m. on campus
