WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team will play its home opener on Friday, as the Demon Deacons host George Washington, Davidson and Winthrop in the Black and Gold Challenge this weekend at Reynolds Gymnasium.
Wake Forest will take on George Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Deacs will then face Davidson at 12:30 p.m. and Winthrop at 7 p.m.
George Washington enters the weekend with a 7-2 overall record. The Colonials opened the 2006 season with six straight victories before going 1-2 at the Hokie Invitational last weekend in Blacksburg, Va.
Wake Forest has faced GWU just once before, falling to the Colonials in 1978.
The Demon Deacons hold a 2-1 all-time record against Davidson. Wake earned a pair of three-game sweeps over Davidson in 1996 and 1997 before falling to the Wildcats in five games in 2000.
Davidson brings a 7-5 overall record to this weekend's tournament. The Wildcats are coming off a four-game win over Charlotte on Tuesday. The Wildcats have faced some top-notch competition, as they have hosted No. 4-ranked Washington and No. 16-ranked Ohio earlier this season. Davidson was swept by both squads.
Winthrop is currently 9-1 overall this season. The Eagles have captured a pair of tournament titles, going undefeated at the Wolpack Classic (Sept. 1-2, Raleigh, N.C.) and the Buccaneers Classic (Sept. 8-9, Johnson City, Tenn.).
Winthrop's only loss has come at the hands of Illinois, as the Eagles fell in three games on Aug. 26.
Wake Forest hold's a 6-9 all-time record against Winthrop. The Demon Deacons have won three of the last four meetings between the two schools, dating back to 1986. The last time the two teams met was in 2004 when Winthrop came away with a five-game victory in Winston-Salem.
The Demon Deacons are currently 2-4 overall this season. Wake Forest is coming off an 0-3 record at the Marriott Flyer Invitational last weekend in Dayton. This weekend will be the Deacs' last non-conference competition this fall, as they open up ACC play Sept. 22 at home against Georgia Tech.
