DALTON, Ga. -- Wake Forest may not be playing its best golf this week at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, but if nothing else, the Demon Deacons have been consistent.

Wake Forest shot a cumulative 1-over par 289 for the second day in a row and is tied for ninth through two rounds of the Carpet Capital. The final 18 holes are scheduled for Sunday on the par 72, 7,002-yard The Farm golf course.

Brendan Gielow, a freshman from Muskegon, Mich., has been the biggest bright spot for Wake Forest. After shooting a 4-under 68 in his first collegiate round of golf on Friday, Gielow shot a 3-under 69 today. Gielow is 7-under for the tournament and alone in third place.

As a team, Wake Forest is 20 strokes off the pace set by first-place Clemson. The Tigers are 18-under par, three strokes in front of Alabama. Florida (-7) is in third place, followed by Tennessee (-5), Georgia State (-4) and NC State (-4). There are 18 teams and 90 players in the three-day tournament.

NC State's Darren Blair (10-under par) leads the individual race, followed by Clemson's Vince Hatfield (-8) and Gielow (-7). Three players are at 6-under par.

Gielow birdied three of the first four holes on the back nine, then stumbled with a bogey on the 14th hole. He took par on holes 15-18 for a 35-34--69.

Wake Forest sophomore Dustin Groves is 1-over through 36 holes and tied for 37th overall. Junior Webb Simpson shot a 73 on Saturday and is 4-over and tied for 50th place overall. Senior Matt McLean, who struggled with a 77 on Friday, shot 73 on Saturday. Junior Chris McCartin shot a 76 Saturday and is 7-over for the tournament.

The Deacons would have to put together a miracle round on Sunday to win the tournament, but they are just six shots out of the top five.
