KENT, OHIO - The No. 1 Wake Forest field hockey team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 3-0 victory over Michigan State, Saturday afternoon. Senior Lauren Crandall and sophomores Minou Gimbrere and Christine Suggs each scored in the victory, which marked the Demon Deacons' sixth shutout of the year.
The Deacs didn't get on the board until five minutes remained in the first half, despite taking four corners and seven shots through the stanza. Connecting on the last one, Crandall scored her seventh goal of the season. Seniors Tracey Scott and Jamie Whitten were both credited with the assist.
The second stanza was much like the first, with the Demon Deacons controlling the game and taking 11 shots and only allowing the Spartans two. Suggs connected at 67:56 with an unassisted shot off a rebounded save. Almost exactly two minutes later and with eight seconds remaining in the game, Gimbrere scored the Deacs final goal off a passing sequence that came from Suggs and Kristi Harshman.
The Demon Deacons closed the afternoon with 18 shots, while the Spartans finished with six. Wake Forest earned 12 penalty corners, while Michigan State took four.
Kristina Gagliardi picked up her fifth shutout of the season and the 22nd of her career, making five saves on the day. Playing in the cage for Michigan State, Stephanie Yuhsaz registered six.
The next outing for Wake Forest will be on Sept. 23 against the No. 1 Maryland. Wake Forest and Maryland are currently tied for the top spot in the NFHCA coach poll. Game time at Kentner Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
