DALTON, Ga. -- Wake Forest finished in the middle of the pack here Sunday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, but the Demon Deacons may have discovered their next rising star in freshman Brendan Gielow.

The Demon Deacons could not muster any momentum on the final 18 holes at The Farm golf course, a par 72, 7,002-yard layout, and finished 11th out of 18 strong teams in the second tournament of the fall. Wake Forest shot a cumulative 2-over 290 today to finish 4-over par for the tournament.

Gielow, a Muskegon, Mich., rookie, shot in the red for the third straight day and finished in a tie for third in the individual race. Gielow rallied on the second nine today to shoot a 71 and finish 8-under par for the tournament. Gielow has played three official rounds as a collegian, and he has yet to shoot higher than 71.

In what developed into an ACC-SEC battle for the team title, Alabama came away the winner after shooting a cumulative 8-under par in the final round. The Crimson Tide passed Clemson, which finished six strokes back in second place. Georgia and Georgia Tech tied for third and Florida finished fifth.

Georgia's Chris Kirk fired a 5-under par 67 on the final 18 holes to pass NC State's Darren Blair for the individual crown. Kirk finished 11-under for the 54-hole tournament, one stroke in front of Blair. Gielow and Clemson's Ben Martin.

Junior Webb Simpson was the only other Deacon to break par today. He shot a 70 to finish 2-over for the tournament and tied for 41st. Sophomore Dustin Groves finished 4-over for the tournament and tied for 48th. Senior Matt McLean and junior Chris McCartin both finished 8-over and tied for 65th.

Wake Forest's next tournament comes Sept. 25-26 at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout in Richmond, Va. The Deacons won that tournament last year.
