Deacons Within Striking Distance With 18 Holes Remaining

ST. ANDREWS BAY, Scotland -- Playing without two-time All-ACC performer Webb Simpson, Wake Forest scrambled through 36 holes to hold down third place at the International Collegiate here on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons, kicking off the 2006-07 season in Scotland along with six other United States' college teams and three local college teams, are eight strokes behind tournament leader North Carolina with 18 holes remaining on Sunday. Stirling, a Scottish college team, is in second place, three strokes behind the Tar Heels.
Five teams are within 12 strokes of the lead heading into Sunday's final round at the Torrance Course, a par 72, 7,037-yard layout on the Scotland coast.
Wake Forest is led by junior Chris McCartin, who shot back-to-back rounds of 70 on Saturday and is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the individual race. McCartin is five strokes behind Stirling's Gordan Yates, who is 9-under par after shooting rounds of 67 and 68. North Carolina's Dustin Johnson is in second place, two strokes behind Yates.
Wake sophomore Dustin Groves shot a 73 in Saturday's morning round, then fired a 2-under 70 in the afternoon for a 1-under 143 total. Senior Sean Moore struggled to a 76 in the opening round, then rebounded with a 3-under 69 in round two. Sophomore Marc Gladson shot a 1-under in the morning round, then ballooned to an 80 in the afternoon. Senior Matt McLean shot a 73 and an 80.
The tournament, which Wake Forest won in 2002 in the inaugural event, is played every four years.
