Wake Forest Finishes Second, Two Strokes Back In Scotland

ST. ANDREWS BAY, Scotland -- Wake Forest shot a cumulative final round of 7-under par, but fell two strokes short of tying North Carolina to finish second to the Tar Heels at the International Collegiate here Sunday.
The Demon Deacons entered Sunday's final 18 holes eight strokes behind North Carolina. Paced by sophomore Dustin Groves, who fired a 5-under par 67, Wake Forest nearly defended its 2002 title despite playing without two-time All-ACC performer Webb Simpson.
The International Collegiate, comprised this year of seven college teams from the United States and three collegiate teams from Scotland, is played every four years. American teams swept the first five places on the scoreboard.
Following North Carolina and Wake Forest was Coastal Carolina, which finished third, one stroke behind the Deacons. Texas Tech finished fourth, followed by Texas A&M. Stirling was the top Scottish team, finishing sixth. Baylor finished seventh and Georgia Southern eighth.
Groves and junior teammate Chris McCartin finished tied for third in the individual race. Both players finished the 54-hole tournament at 6-under. McCartin shot 2-under 70 in each of the three rounds.
Stirling's Gordan Yates ran away with the individual crown. He finished 13-under par o the par 72, 7,037-yard layout, five strokes in front of Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson. Groves and McCartin finished in a pack of five players tied for third place.
Other Wake Forest scorers included senior Sean Moore, who finished tied for 21st place at 2-over. Sophomore Marc Gladson sandwiched two rounds of 1-under 71 around a second round of 80 to finish 6-over and tied for 30th. Senior Matt McLean, who opened the tournament with a 73, shot back-to-back rounds of 80 and finished 17-over.
Wake's Chad Wilcox played unattached, which means his rounds did not count toward the team score. Wilcox improved each day, shooting 80-76-72--228 (+12).
Wake Forest returns to action Sept. 15-17 at The Farm/Carpet Capital in Dalton, Ga.
