BLACKSBURG, VA. - Senior Elizabeth Remy scored a goal and added an assist, helping lead the No. 20 Wake Forest women's soccer team past Liberty, 4-0, Friday evening in the opening game of the Virginia Tech Tournament. The win marks the Demon Deacons fourth consecutive victory and improves Wake Forest to 4-1 on the season.
Junior Megan Upchurch and freshmen Sarah Winslow and Kaley Fountain also added goals in the victory. Upchurch has scored in three of the last four games and currently leads the Deacs with four goals on the season. The points for Winslow and Fountain are the first of the season for both.
Remy, who missed the last two games due to injury, got Wake Forest off to a quick start, scoring off a corner kick in the fourth minute of the game. The score did not change until four minutes remained in the first half when Winslow took the ball up the field, defeated the defenders and then nailed the ball past the keeper to give Wake a two goal advantage going into intermission.
In the second half, Fountain was able to cushion the Deacs lead by one as she lofted the ball into the cage from 15 yards out. Upchurch solidified the win in the 85th minute as she received a cross into the center of the box from Remy.
On the night, the Deacs dominated on offense, taking 22 shots, while the Flames had seven. Wake Forest took eight corner kicks and allowed three. Splitting time in goal Laura Morse and Kaitlyn Doe each had one save in 45 minutes.
Wake Forest will return to the field on Sunday as the Demon Deacons close out the tournament with James Madison. Game time against the Dukes is set for 1 p.m.
