DAYTON, Ohio - Despite a double-double performance by redshirt sophomore Jessica Furlong, the Wake Forest volleyball team fell in five games to Indiana Friday evening in the opening match of the Marriott Flyer Invitational. The Hoosiers defeated the Demon Deacons 21-30, 30-22, 30-23, 29-31, 15-11.
With the loss, Wake Forest falls to 2-2 overall, while Indiana improves its record to 6-1.
Furlong posted her eighth career double-double with 20 kills and 13 digs on the night. She also added a pair of block assists and a service ace.
Redshirt sophomore Natalie Mullikin and junior Michael Faulkner joined Furlong with double-figure kill totals. Mullikin had 14 kills, while Faulkner chipped in 10. Mullikin also had four total blocks, including two block solos.
Senior Natasha Schaefer led the Deacs with 14 digs, while fellow senior Jenna Doane and freshman Dylan Faulkner had 12 and 10 digs respectively.
Dylan Faulkner also had a productive night setting the ball for Wake's hitters, as the freshman dished out a career-best 57 assists.
Junior Jackie Lucas led the Demon Deacons with five total blocks, recording four block assists and one block solo.
In game one, Wake Forest never trailed as the Deacs posted their best hitting game so far this season. Wake hit an incredible .548 with 19 kills and just two errors in 31 attempts.
With the Demon Deacons holding a 5-3 advantage early in the game, Wake Forest used a modest 12-6 run to pull away for a 17-9 lead. Wake never let Indiana get within reach the rest of the way, cruising to a 30-21 win.
Game two was a stark contrast for the Demon Deacons, however. Wake Forest hit just .029 for the game, while Indiana never trailed en route to a 30-22 win.
The Deacs had a chance to take game three, as they battled back from an early five-point deficit to take a five-point lead of their own at 21-16. However, the Hoosiers responded with a 14-2 run to end the game at 30-23.
In game four, Wake Forest had to once again overcome an early deficit as the Deacons trailed by as many as six points.
Wake used a 12-6 run to even the game at 18-18 and then scored six of the next eight points to take a 24-20 lead. However, the Hoosiers fought back to re-take the lead at 28-26.
Lucas and Michael Faulkner had back-to-back kills to tie the game before an IU hitting error gave the Demon Deacons a 29-28 lead. After a Hoosier kill tied the game again, Michael Faulkner and Mullikin put the game away with back-to-back kills, giving Wake Forest the 31-29 win.
In the fifth and deciding game, Indiana pulled away late, using an 8-4 run to break a 7-7 tie and win the game 15-11.
The five-game match was the Deacs' first this season after playing eight five-game contests a year ago. Wake Forest was 4-4 in five-game matches in 2005.
Wake Forest returns to action tomorrow when it takes on tournament host Dayton at 11 a.m. and No. 22 LSU at 5 p.m.
