Wake Forest vs. No. 3 Maryland
Wake Forest will look to rebound from a disappointing loss on Thursday with an afternoon matinee at defending national champion Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 21. The game will be broadcast live on CSTV. Wake enters the weekend 8-10 overall and 0-5 in the ACC. The Deacons are coming off a frustrating 74-34 loss to Virginia Tech. Maryland is 19-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC after a 95-68 win over Virginia on Friday. The last time the Demon Deacons and Terrapins hooked up, it took overtime to determine the victor.
College Park Homecoming
Though Sunday is a road game for Wake Forest, a few Demon Deacons will feel right at home in College Park. Freshman Courteney Morris grew up in Riverdale, Md., just two miles from the UM campus. Morris, who was a Maryland basketball fan before coming to Wake, expects to have upwards of 200 of her closest family and friends at the game. Junior Melissa Washington is in a similar situation, being from nearby Upper Marlboro, and expects to have a large contingent of supporters. Sophomore Yolanda Lavender and assistant coach Natasha Adair are both Washington D.C. natives. Also, Wake's two fall signees are from the region: Kem Wilson is a Frederick, Md., native and Camille Collier is from D.C.
Last Time Out
The Demon Deacons are coming off a 74-34 loss to Virginia Tech at home on Thursday. Wake Forest had its worst shooting performance of the season (23.3 percent) and scored just 12 points in the second half. Wake's 34 total points were the third-lowest in program history and the lowest total since the Deacs scored 31 in a loss to Western Carolina during the 1973-74 season. Virginia Tech held Wake Forest scoreless for a nine-minute stretch between the two periods. The Hokies used a 22-2 run between the halves to break a 26-20 game wide open.
Next Up...
Wake Forest will return home for a three-game homestand at the Joel, beginning with a showdown with city rival Winston-Salem State on Friday, Jan. 26. Two days later, the Deacs welcome Georgia Tech to town before hosting NC State on Feb. 1.
