Deacons in Seventh Place after Two Rounds at VCU Shootout

MANAKIN SABOT, Va. - Wake Forest is in seventh place after the first 36 holes of the VCU Shootout being contested at the Manakin Course at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin Sabot, Va. The Deacons logged a one-over 289 in the first round on Monday morning and then fired a two-under 286 in the afternoon round.
Wake Forest's one-under 575 team score is just 13 strokes off co-leaders Wisconsin and Penn State which each shot 14-under 562 team scores on Monday. Chattanooga is third at 566 followed by North Carolina (568), Virginia Tech (573), VCU (574), and then Wake Forest. Trailing the Deacons are Southeastern Louisiana (577), Wichita State (577), Old Dominion (579), Maryland (583), Iowa State (587), UNC Wilmington (590), South Florida (592) and Liberty (601).
Webb Simpson is Wake Forest's leader after opening with rounds of 71-70 for a three-under 141. Simpson is tied for ninth individually. Penn State's Kevin Foley fired rounds of 65 and 68 and is the leader at 11-under 133. UNC's Kevin O'Connell is at 9-under 135.
Freshman Chris Cannon, playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a two-over 146 including rounds of 74-72. Cannon is tied for 34th overall. Dustin Groves turned in the low round by a Deacon on Monday with a second round 69. Groves is tied for 42nd at three-over 147 after a first round 78.
Brendan Gielow is tied for 50th after rounds of 70-78 for a four-over 148. Chris McCartin finished the day at five-over 149 including rounds of 74-75.
Travis Wadkins entered the tournament as an individual and open with a 78 before withdrawing.
The 54-hole event concludes on Tuesday.
