WINTSON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 21 Wake Forest women's soccer team held a 1-0 lead over No. 25 Duke for fifty minutes, but a goal by Blue Devil CJ Ludemann in the 79th minute set the match in a 1-1 knot that couldn't be undone through the final 30 minutes of action on Thursday night at Spry Stadium.
The draw sets both teams at 2-2-2 in ACC action, while Duke stays just in front of Wake in the conference standings with a 7-3-4 overall record. The Demon Deacons are now 7-5-3 in 2007.
Jill Hutchinson launched a kick from 35 yards out that sailed over Duke keeper Allison Lipsher and into the top right corner of the Blue Devil goal to put Wake up 1-0. Senior Laura Colven made the long pass to Hutchinson from the right corner of the penalty area, getting credit for her first assist of the season.
The Deacons dominated possession for most of the first half and had several opportunities to add another point to the Wake tally. Junior Amy Smerdzinski had an open look in the 35th minute but the shot went just high of the net. Overall the Deacs out-shot the Blue Devils 6-1 in the first half.
The tables turned during halftime and the Blue Devils regrouped to maintain possession for most of the second half. The Blue Devils out-shot the Deacs 5-4, giving Ludemann a chance to net the game-tying goal.
Wake was unable to land any shots during the two periods of overtime, while the Blue Devils managed three. At the end of the game the Deacs still held a 10-9 shot advantage.
The Demon Deacons will continue ACC action as they head into Tiger territory to face Clemson in South Carolina at 1 p.m.
