Wake Forest Begins ACC Championship as Third Seed

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 3 Wake Forest field hockey team and defending ACC Tournament Champion will enter this year's Championship as the No. 3 seed. The Demon Deacons will face sixth-seeded Duke at 4 p.m. in the second game of the opening day on Thursday, Nov. 1 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Demon Deacons closed out conference play on Sunday with a 3-2 victory over Boston College to finish the season with a 3-2 ACC record, placing third behind North Carolina and Maryland in the conference standings.

During the regular season, Wake Forest (12-4, 3-2) defeated the Blue Devils (11-7, 1-4) 4-2 in Durham. The Deacs will play a first round game in the conference tournament for the first time since 2004 when the fourth-seeded Demon Deacons defeated fifth-seeded Virginia 5-1.

Game one of the ACC Championship, played at 1 p.m., will pit Boston College, the four seed, against fifth-seeded Virginia. During the regular season, both teams posted 1-4 records in league play, and could be separated for seeding purposes only by goal differential in conference games.

North Carolina earned the No. 1 seed after completing the 2007 regular season with a perfect 5-0 record in conference and an 18-0 record overall. The Tar Heels, along with No. 2 seed Maryland, received byes and will begin their title quest beginning Friday, Nov. 2.

North Carolina will face the winner of the BC-Virginia game on Friday at 4 p.m. Maryland will take on the winner of the Wake Forest-Duke game later that evening at 7 p.m.

The winners of Friday's two semifinal match-ups will enjoy a day off on Saturday before their clash in the ACC championship game on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 1:00 p.m.

All five ACC tournament games will be available for viewing throughout the week. Thursday's and Friday's games will be webcast live on www.ACCSelect.com, while Sunday's league championship showdown will be televised regionally on FSN South, Comcast Sportsnet Mid-Atlantic and New England Sports Network.
