In-State Success
Wake Forest has won seven straight games against in-state opponents dating back to the 2005 season. The last North Carolina team to beat the Deacons was UNC, 31-24, on Nov. 13, 2004. The Deacons have not lost on the road to an in-state opponent since Nov. 8, 2003 at North Carolina, 42-34. Jim Grobe is now 20-5 against in-state opponents.
Alphonso Smith
Alphonso Smith's 30-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter was significant for many reasons:
- It was his third interception return for a TD this year, tying the school and ACC records. He shares the school record with Marcus McGruder (2004).
- It was the fourth interception return for a TD of his career, setting a school record and tying the ACC record, which he shares with Virginia's Randy Neal (1991-94).
- Smith now has 201 career interception return yards, the most in Wake Forest history. The previous record-holder was Ronnie Burgess who had 176 yards (1981-84).
Moore-Moore-Moore
- Kenny Moore scored two rushing touchdowns for the first time in his career. He ran it in from 21 yards out in the second quarter and then scored the game-clinching touchdown on a 53-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
- Moore now has three rushing touchdowns this year. He leads the team with five touchdowns total, which includes one receiving and one on a punt return. He has scored a touchdown in four of Wake Forest's first five games this season.
- Moore led the team in rushing with 84 yards on four carries.
- Moore entered the game as the ACC's leader in receptions per game with 6.75 per game. He met his average in the first half (nine) and finished the game with 11.
- Moore notched his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, finishing with an even 100 yards.
Andrews Finds Paydirt
Micah Andrews' 4-yard touchdown run with eight seconds remaining in the first half was his first touchdown of the season and his first touchdown since a 6-yard run at Connecticut on Sept. 16, 2006.
First Scores
- Duke scored first, recording a safety with 12:30 to play in the first quarter when long snapper Greg Bechtel snapped the ball over the head of punter Sam Swank. Swank picked the ball up and threw it out of the end zone.
- It marked the first safety allowed by Wake since NC State tallied a safety on Oct. 22, 2005.
Sam Swank Keeps Kicking
- Sam Swank's PAT after Wake Forest's fifth touchdown marked his 80th consecutive successful PAT.
- Swank's 46-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter was his longest of the season. It is the ninth-longest of his career.
- With field goals of 46 and 18 yards, Sam Swank notched the 14th multiple field goal game of his career.
- Swank has 218 career points (after 2 field goals and 5 PATs vs. Duke), which moves into third place on Wake Forest's career scoring list. He is 12 points shy of second (Wilson Hoyle, 1986-89, 230) and 22 points shy of the school record of 240 set by Chris Barclay from 2002-05.
Penalties
Wake Forest came in to the game having been penalized just 16 times in the first four games. The Deacons drew five penalties in the first quarter and 10 for the game. Wake was penalized for a total of 107 yards against the Blue Devils.
Career Highs
- De'Angelo Bryant made a career-high 2 catches for 17 yards,
- Duke's Eron Riley caught a 68-yard touchdown pass to put the Blue Devils up 9-0. It marked the longest pass allowed by Wake Forest this season.
- Chip Brinkman equaled his career-high with five receptions and also had a career-best 31 yards.
Team Notes
- Wake Forest scored a season-high 41 points
- Alphonso Smith's interception return for a touchdown was the team's sixth non-offensive touchdown this year (4 interception returns, 1 punt return, 1 fumble return). Smith is responsible for three of those scores.
Starters
- Two Wake Forest players made their first career start on Saturday. TB Josh Adams and RG Barrett McMillin were each in the starting lineup.
- DE Matt Robinson saw action for the first time since the season opener at Boston College. Robinson had suffered a sprained ankle against the Eagles and then re-sprained it 10 days ago.
