CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three Demon Deacons turned in double-doubles, but Wake Forest came up just short in its season finale at Virginia Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers edged the Deacons in five games 30-23, 33-35, 30-26, 25-30, 15-12.
Wake Forest ends the season 8-23 overall and 5-17 in the ACC. Virginia finishes the year 18-13 overall and 13-9 in conference play.
Senior Michael Faulkner and freshmen Kelsey Jones and Kristen White all posted double-doubles in the loss. White had an impressive double-double of 21 kills and 25 digs. Both totals were season-highs for White.
Faulkner ended her collegiate career with 10 kills and 10 digs for her second double-double of the year. Faulkner also added four block assists.
Jones turned in season-high totals of 66 assists and 19 digs for her team-best 14th double-double of the year. Jones, who ended the year with double-doubles in four of her last five matches, also recorded three block assists.
Junior Natalie Mullikin tallied 20 kills on the night, marking the fifth time this season she has reached the 20-kill plateau. Mullikin also finished with five total blocks, including one block solo.
Freshman Lauren McIntyre led the Deacons in blocks with eight total. She had seven block assists and one solo. McIntyre, who hit .346 in the match, was also in double digits for kills with 11.
Freshman libero Megan Thornberry recorded her eighth match with 20+ digs, finishing the night with 21.
Virginia jumped on Wake Forest early in game one. The Cavs used an 8-2 run to break a 3-3 tie. The Deacs could not get closer than four the rest of the way, as UVa took game one 30-23.
Virginia looked to run away with game two as well, doubling up Wake 16-8. However, the Deacons used a 13-4 run, capped by a kill from Faulkner, to take a 21-20 lead.
UVa took the first two game points, 29-28 and 30-29. Wake hung tough and took three unsuccessful game points of its own. With the match tied 33-33, White and McIntyre hit back-to-back kills to give the Deacs a 35-33 win.
The Cavaliers pulled away late in game three for the win. Holding a 21-18 advantage, UVa scored four straight for a 25-18 lead. Virginia won the game, 30-26.
The Deacons used the same strategy for a win in game four. With the contest tied 17-17, Wake Forest took four straight points for a 21-17 advantage. The Deacs never relinquished the lead and won the game 30-25.
Game five went down to the wire as neither squad could gain more than a two-point advantage early on. Virginia led 2-0 and 5-3 before Wake Forest battled back for a 7-5 margin of its own.
With the game tied 11-11, UVa scored three straight for match point. A kill from White pulled Wake to within 14-12, but Katie Oakes put the match away with a kill for the Cavaliers.
