Miami Takes Down Wake Forest in Three Games

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Natalie Mullikin moved into second place on Wake Forest's career total blocks list, but the Demon Deacons could not keep up with Miami falling in three games to the Hurricanes Saturday evening at Reynolds Gymnasium. Miami defeated Wake 30-22, 30-28, 30-27.
The Deacons fall to 7-18 overall and 4-12 in the ACC. The Canes improve to 11-14 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
Mullikin finished with three total blocks, including a pair of block solos, to move past Jessica Hood (1997-2000) for second place on Wake's career blocks list. Mullikin, who holds the school's career record for block solos, has 366 total blocks for her career. Margaret Davidson (1998-2001) holds the record with 472.
Against Miami, Mullikin led the Deacons with 18 kills. She hit .552 with just two errors in 29 attempts.
Freshmen Lauren McIntyre and Kristen White turned in seven and six kills respectively.
Freshman setter Kelsey Jones dished out 33 assists and recorded six digs.
Sophomore Abby Miller and freshman Megan Thornberry tied for the team lead with nine digs each, while White was right behind with eight. Thornberry, the Deacons' usual libero, also had seven kills playing outside hitter on Saturday.
White and sophomore Sara Uniacke each tallied two aces. Junior Mary-Margaret Langston made her first career start for the Deacons.
Miami pulled away early and cruised to victory in game one. The Hurricanes used a 14-5 run to take a sizable 25-16 cushion. UM finished with a 30-22 win.
Mullikin and White had four kills each in game one, and Jones dished out 10 assists.
Game two was much tighter than game one, but the Hurricanes still managed to come out on top. Miami broke a 23-23 tie with a 5-3 run. The Deacs pulled to within one, 29-28, but a kill from Genny Mayhew put the game away for the Canes.
Mullikin led the Deacs with seven kills and two block solos, while Miller had a team-best six digs in game two.
Wake Forest took an early 5-1 lead in game three, but Miami used a 12-4 run to take a 13-9 advantage. The Deacs fought back to get within one, 26-25, but the Canes scored three straight to take game point. Miami finished with a 30-27 win.
Mullikin had seven kills and no errors in 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage in game three.
The Deacons will hit the road for a pair of matches next weekend, traveling to Clemson and Georgia Tech. Wake will take on the Tigers on Thursday at 7 p.m. and the Yellow Jackets Friday at 8 p.m.
