WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 2 Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated in-state ACC rival North Carolina 2-0 on Saturday Night at Spry Stadium.

Junior defender Lyle Adams scored the game-winner in the first shot of the game at the five minute mark, wrangling a free kick by Pat Phelan through the UNC defense. The goal was the defender's third of the season.

The Deacons had several opportunities to add a security goal, but it was junior midfielder Sam Cronin who set the final Demon Deacon mark at 2 when he charged towards the Tar Heel net from 35 yards out and took the shot the from the middle of the penalty area. Sophomore Austin da Luz set Cronin up for the goal for his ninth assist of the season.

North Carolina featured goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty in only his third game of the season. The Deacons didn't go easy on the sophomore and fired nine shots to UNC's two shots, including four shots on goal. The Tar Heel keeper posted three saves, but after 90 minutes Wake's two goals were the deciding factor.

WFU goalkeeper Brian Edwards registered his 9th shutout of the season and is 11-1-1 in 2007. Wake currently has 10 shutouts for the year and is on pace to possibly tie or surpass the current season shutout record of 13 set in 2006.

UNC now stands at 6-6-5 with a 3-4-0 conference record.
