LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The No. 11 Wake Forest women's soccer team picked up five All-ACC selections for the 2007 season.
Jill Hutchinson, Kaley Fountain, Allie Sadow, Amy Smerdzinski and Samantha Germano received recognition by conference coaches for their efforts in helping the Demon Deacons finish second in ACC regular season standings with an 11-5-3, 6-2-2 record.
Hutchinson, a Wayne Pa. native, is the leading Demon Deacon scorer with 10 goals for the season. Soccer Buzz named the sophomore striker to their National Elite Team of the Week on three separate occasions, most recently for her game-winning goal in Wake's 3-2 upset over No. 10 Florida State. Hutchinson is also a two-time recipient of the ACC's Player of the Week award for performances against FSU and No. 13 West Virginia.
Kaley Fountain, out of Austin, Texas, followed up her All-ACC Freshman honors from 2006 with Second Team honors in her sophomore year with the Demon Deacons. From her defensive position, Fountain is the team assist leader with six for the season. In the summer of 2007 Fountain was invited to play with the U-20 U.S. Women's National Team.
Another Texas native, Allie Sadow out of Dallas, also earned Second Team honors this season after being named to last year's ACC-All Freshman Team. Sadow has posted five goals and four assists through the team's 19 matches. In Wake's ACC opener vs. Virginia Tech on September 27 the sophomore forward netted two goals and posted the game-winning assist.
Amy Smerdzinski, a junior from Chantilly, Va., took honors for her stellar performance in the Wake midfield. Smerdzinski has started every game for the Deacons this season and racked up a tally of four goals and three assists during regular season play. In Wake Forest's most recent match Smerdzinski netted the game-winner over No. 25 Miami, which gave the Deacons a No. 2 seed at the ACC Tournament for the first time since 2000.
Wake's rookie ACC selection is New Jersey native Samantha Germano, who has earned minutes in every contest this season. The aggressive midfielder has earned one goal and two assists this season. Germano's only goal came in the form of the game-winner in Wake's 2-1 upset over No.20 Clemson in double overtime, giving the Deacs their third ACC win of the year.
The No.2 seed Demon Deacons will begin ACC Tournament play on Wednesday against No. 7 seed Duke at 5 p.m. in Lake Buena Vista Florida. The will be televised live over the internet at ACCSelect.com.
