Wake Takes Down Duke 1-0 in OT

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Kaley Fountain's game-winner in the first overtime period sailed beautifully in the left corner of the net, as No. 2 Wake Forest pulled off a 1-0 win over a tough seventh-seeded Duke team in game three of the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
A second team All-ACC selection, Fountain scored with 4:18 remaining on the clock in the first overtime period to give the Demon Deacons their fifth consecutive win and improve to 12-5-3 on the year. Teammates Sarah Winslow and Samantha Germano, an All-ACC Freshman honoree, assisted on the game-winning goal.
"We took some gambles to try and take advantage of the wind," Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz said. "Like most teams in the ACC, Duke is always competitive. It's always a tough game with Duke."
Both teams combined for a total of 28 shots, with Wake Forest tallying 12 shots while Duke recorded 10 in both halves. Neither was able to find the back of the net, as the clock winded down and the contest ended in regulation with a 0-0 tie.
Duke and Wake Forest each posted three shots in the first overtime period, and the Deacs finally broke through the Blue Devil defense. Fountain sailed a shot from 12 yards out for the clincher with less than five minutes left. It was her first goal and game-winner of the season.
"I'm very, very proud of our girls," Duke head coach Robbie Church said. "They did everything we asked them to do. Wake Forest plays wonderful soccer and we wish them the best of luck."
Wake Forest used two goalkeepers in the contest, starting off with Laura Morse but finishing with Amanda Barasha who recorded five saves in the win. Duke's Allison Lipsher made six stops in the loss and played the entire game.
Heading to the semifinals for the second year in a row, the Deacs will play the winner of the Boston College/Florida State game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Top seed North Carolina and No. 4 seed Virginia will square off in the first semifinal at 5:00 p.m. Both will be webcast on ACCSelect.com.
