Wake Forest Finishes 7-1 at Home Tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In its second competition of the spring, Wake Forest finished with an outstanding 7-1 record in the 10-team round robin tournament hosted by the Demon Deacons Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Gym. Wake Forest picked up two-game sweeps of High Point, Radford and NC State and split with East Carolina.
The Deacons opened the tournament with a split against East Carolina. Wake took the first game, 30-25, before falling in the second, 30-27.
Wake Forest did not lose from there on out. The Deacs swept High Point, 30-22 and 30-27 and then did the same to Radford, 30-19 and 30-21.
The Demon Deacons finished up their day with a two-game sweep of ACC-rival NC State. Wake defeated State, 30-22 and 30-23.
Junior Jackie Lucas led the team with 0.64 blocks on the day and finished second in kills with an average of 2.86.
Freshman Kate Rodriguez led Wake Forest with 3.0 kills per game.
Sophomores Natalie Mullikin and Jessica Furlong also had solid days at the net, averaging 2.5 and 2.4 kills per game respectively.
Mullikin turned in 0.42 blocks per game, while Furlong averaged 0.34 blocks.
Junior Michael Faulkner had 1.8 kills per game on the day. Michael's younger sister, freshman Dylan Faulkner, averaged 1.0 kills per game from her setter position.
Sophomore Ashley Homitz finished with 0.28 blocks per game and 1.0 kills per game.
Defensively, sophomore Mary-Margaret Langston and freshmen Abby Miller and Sara Uniacke held down the back row for the Demon Deacons.
Statistics for assists and digs were not kept.
Freshmen Sally Fischer and Lindsay Gardner each missed their second straight tournament due to injuries.
After going 5-3 at Duke's spring tournament on March 24, Wake Forest now holds a spring record of 12-4.
The Deacons return to action on Thursday when they host Winthrop in a 6 p.m. play-date at Reynolds Gym. Admission to the exhibition game is free of charge.
