WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2007 season. Led by third-year head coach Heather Kahl Holmes, the Demon Deacons will participate in three invitational tournaments and will also face the ACC round-robin slate regular season schedule.
Kahl Holmes and the Deacons open the season on August 31 at the Miami of Ohio Tournament. Wake Forest will open with host Miami (Ohio) on Friday before facing Pittsburgh and Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 1. The Deacs have faced Miami just once, falling to the Redhawks in 2003, and will be getting their first-ever look at Pittsburgh and Michigan.
Wake returns home the following weekend to host its annual Black & Gold Challenge. Dayton, Jacksonville and Radford will visit Winston-Salem to participate in the four-team invitational held at Reynolds Gym. The Deacons first match of the weekend will be against Dayton on Friday, Sept. 7. The two teams hooked up last season in Dayton, as the Flyers came away with a three-game sweep of the Demon Deacons.
On Saturday, Sept. 8, Wake Forest will face Radford and Jacksonville in the second day of the Black & Gold Challenge. The Deacons are 8-3 all-time against Radford and 0-1 against Jacksonville. The last time Wake and Jacksonville met was in 1984.
The Deacs will wrap up their non-conference schedule at the University of Houston Tournament Sept. 14-15. The weekend will be a homecoming for Wake Forest's three Texas natives. Dylan Faulkner and Michael Faulkner are from Austin, while Jackie Lucas is from New Braunfels.
At the Houston Tournament, Wake will be facing three opponents it has never met on the volleyball court. The Deacons open the weekend against Rice on Friday before playing Stephen F. Austin and host Houston on Saturday.
Wake Forest begins its 22-match ACC regular season three days later. The Deacons open conference play at defending ACC champion Duke on Sept. 18.
The Demon Deacons return home for a weekend set against Boston College and Maryland Sept. 21-22.
Wake then hits the road for four straight matches, beginning with a trip to sunny Florida. The Deacs will play at Miami on Sept. 28 and at Florida State on Sept. 30.
Wake Forest opens the month of October with a pair of road matches against in-state rivals North Carolina and NC State. Having swept both opponents last season, the Deacons will face the Tar Heels on Oct. 4 and the Wolfpack on Oct. 6.
Starting with its Oct. 9 match with Duke, Wake Forest will play five straight matches at Reynolds Gym. The Demon Deacons host Clemson and Georgia Tech in a weekend series Oct. 12-13.
The following weekend, Virginia and Virginia Tech come to town. Wake faces the Cavaliers on Oct. 19 and the Hokies the following night on Oct. 20.
The Deacs will travel north to face Maryland and Boston College on Oct. 26 and 28 before returning home to play Florida State and Miami the following weekend.
Wake Forest then heads south to play at Clemson on Nov. 8 and at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9.
The Deacons will wrap up the home portion of their schedule the next weekend. After North Carolina comes to Reynolds Gym on Wednesday, Nov. 14, Wake Forest will play NC State in its home finale on Friday, Nov. 16.
Wake closes out the regular season in the state of Virginia, bookending the Thanksgiving holiday with a pair of matches. The Deacs play at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and then at Virginia on Friday, Nov. 23.
The NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds begin on Nov. 30 with Regionals scheduled for Dec. 7-8. The NCAA Final Four is slated for Dec. 13-15 in Sacramento, Calif.
