The fourth in a series of blogs written by sophomore Dustin Groves, a key member of the Demon Deacon golf team. Wake Forest is participating this week at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championships later this month in Williamsburg, Va. Groves gives a behind-the-scenes look at traveling with the Deacons.
Greetings from the NCAA West Regional.
Our Friday morning began very early with a 5 a.m. wake up call. Even though it was early, everyone seemed awake and ready to play. We ate at our favorite bagel place and again everyone was amazed by how much Sean ate.
Our warm-up session this morning was much more pleasant because of the cooler weather. We got off to a slower start than the first day but made up for it on our inward nine. Chris shot 30 (5-under) on the final nine holes and Brendan shot 67 (5-under) for the day, which propelled the team to an 11-under par 277 total.
Webb added a 2-under par 70 and I ended with 1-under 71. Everyone felt like they played well but also felt that shots were left out on the course. For example, both Chris and Webb doubledbogeyed the 18th hole and I had a bad day with the flatstick. With that said, we have at least put ourselves in a position to play well and finish in the top 10 by the end of Saturday.
After a short practice session in the 100 degree heat, Chris and I came back to the hotel. We got in bed (not together), turned the AC on high, and took a much-needed 2-hour nap. After our nap the team headed to dinner, where everyone was relaxed and Webb provided the table with some of his famous "would-you-rathers".
There is a quiet confidence lingering among the team this Friday night. We know if everyone is relaxed and we play to our ability there will be no need to worry about finishing in the top 10.
Until then...
Prediction - Spurs / Pistons final = lowest TV ratings ever
