WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Wake Forest's golf season came to an end one day sooner than it would have liked. The 22nd-ranked Demon Deacons, in 26th place after three rounds of the NCAA Championships, did not make the cut for Saturday's final round.
The Deacons shot a 5-over par 285 on Friday -- their best round of the tournament. With the 30-team field cut in half, Wake Forest (+25 through 54 holes) would have needed a near-perfect day at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course to finish in the top 15.
Stanford, at 12-under par, and Coastal Carolina, at 10-under, are threatening to make it a two-team chase for the NCAA title on Saturday. The Cardinal and Chanticleers are eight strokes in front of Charlotte and Alabama, which are tied for third place. No. 1-ranked Georgia shot 11-under on Friday to get to even par for the tournament and the Bulldogs are alone in fifth place.
Wake Forest got another strong effort Friday from junior Webb Simpson, who shot his second straight round of 1-under par 69. He had a wild ride on holes 13-17 Friday, going eagle, bogey, birdie, double-bogey, birdie. Simpson, a candidate for All-American honors, finished even par for the tournament.
Freshman Brendan Gielow shot a 1-over 71 on Friday to finish 7-over for the tournament. Junior Chris McCartin, who shot a 71 Friday, finished 13-over for the tournament. Senior Sean Moore closed out his career with a 4-over 74 to complete the event at 13-over. Sophomore Dustin Groves struggled to an 80 on Friday and finished the tournament 23-over.
Saturday's final round should feature some drama in the race for individual medalist honors. Three players -- Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale, Clemson's Kyle Stanley and Stanford's Rob Grube -- are all tied for the lead at 6-under. Four players are one shot back at 5-under.
While Wake Forest was disappointed to miss the cut, the Demon Deacons did enjoy another highly successful year in 2006-07. Wake had five top-5 finishes including a first-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. Juniors Simpson and McCartin earned first team All-ACC and All-South Region honors.
