CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 2 Demon Deacons defeated No. 20 Old Dominion 2-1 to open the 2007 season at the Nike Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill.
Deacon midfielder Corben Bone netted the first goal of the night, assisted by Lyle Adams and Zack Schilawski, but ODU's Ambane Eammanuel fired back just eight minutes later to knot the contest at 1-1.
After WFU out-shot the Monarchs 4-2 in the first half, ODU stepped up the offensive attack to out-shoot Wake 4-3 in the second half. WFU countered with biting defense, recording seven fouls in the second half compared to the first half's three.
The Deacons held ODU shotless in the first overtime and limited the Monarchs to just one shot in the second OT. Evan Brown netted the golden goal in the 107th minute from a rebounded save passed by Bone.
WFU goalkeeper Brian Edwards played all 106 minutes and 15 seconds in net, recording two saves. The Deacs outshot ODU 13-7, with Austin da Luz, Lyle Adams and Corben Bone each firing three shots for the night.
