WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 1 Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated Louisville 1-0 Saturday night at Spry Stadium.
Wake junior Marcus Tracy had the only goal of the night in the 78th minute, scoring from a corner kick by sophomore Austin da Luz.
With the win the Demon Deacons now stand at 5-0-0 for the season while the Cardinals are 3-2-0.
The aggressive Louisville defense proved to be a challenge for the Deacs to navigate. The Cardinals flooded the backline, making it difficult for the Deacs to find shooting opportunities. In the first half Wake only posted two shots, the lowest amount for a regulation period this season.
"Louisville was a very physical team," forward Michael Lahoud said. "They'd also plug up all the holes. But at half time coach [Jay Vidovich] told us to lift up the tempo and we did a better job of getting through the defense in the second half."
Lahoud had a near miss in the 68th minute, firing a missile from inside the 18-yard line that looked like a sure thing but went just wide of the net.
Tracy followed a few minutes later with his golden goal to give the Deacons the 1-0 edge over the Cardinals.
"He's the most gifted athlete on our team," Lahoud said. "Every time a ball is thrown out he'll be the one to jump high enough to get control of it. It was definitely a big time goal."
Next up for the Demon Deacons will be the ACC season kick-off, as Wake travels to South Carolina to face Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 21.
