GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Demon Deacons were picked second in the ACC Preseason Poll, as determined by a vote of the league's nine head coaches. The mark is the highest place for the Deacs since 2003 when the squad also achieved the runner-up spot.
Despite the loss of senior strikers Steven Curfman, Ryan Solle and Wells Thompson, three key Deacon defenders, Pat Phelan, Julian Valentin and Brian Edwards (GK), return for a final season with WFU. Last season the Deacon defense posted a record breaking 12 shutouts, helping the squad earn its ACC Co-Champion title.
In 2006 the Deacons had their best post season to date, traveling to the NCAA College Cup. The run ended in the semifinals, when UC Santa Barbara edged Wake in a 4-3 shootout.
Duke topped the preseason poll, following the 2006 ACC Championship and an NCAA finish in the quarterfinals.
