Deacs Snap Cardinal Win Streak at Spry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team handed Louisville its first loss of the season, defeating the Cardinals 2-0 at Spry Stadium Wednesday night.
With the win the Demon Deacons improved to 3-3-0 while the Cards stand at 4-1-0.
Louisville started strong, maintaining possession through the most of the first ten minutes of the match. It didn't take long for the Deacs to find their footing, however, and Jill Hutchinson surprised the Cardinals by finishing a long pass from Amanda Lebo to get WFU on the board in the 12th minute.
It looked like trouble for the Deacs in the 20th minute, when the Cardinals lured goalkeeper Amanda Barasha from the net, but Caitlin Farrell slipped in just in time to deflect a Louisville shot, keeping the Cards from the tying the contest. Another Cardinal shot was fired off the rebound, but the shot was high and Wake was able to regain control following the Louisville corner kick.
The second half started off with a bang, as the Deacon offense charged the Louisville keeper, firing two back-to-back shots before sophomore Sarah Winslow hit the mark in the 46th minute.
"Everyone played well together," Hutchinson said. "We put a lot of pressure on the goalie and just kept shooting."
The Deacs kept up the intensity in the offense through the end of the contest, firing ten shots in the second half. Head Coach Tony da Luz took advantage of the team's depth in the forward and midfield positions to help the cause.
"We rotated between two sets of forwards to keep everyone fresh," da Luz said.
The Deacon defense held the Cards to just three shots throughout the entire contest. After the Louisville rush to WFU goal in the 20th minute, the only other big scare for the Deacs occurred in the 77th minute, when Cardinal midfielder Emily Prokopik charged through the penalty mark, colliding with Barasha at the edge of the goal area. The ball slipped from Barasha's hands into the net, but Prokopik was charged with a yellow card, nullifying the goal.
The next contest for the Deacons will be on Saturday, when the squad heads 30 minutes east to face defending Southern Conference champions the UNC-G Spartans in Greensboro, N.C.
