WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Fresh off its first NCAA Tournament appearance in five seasons, Wake Forest is back at it preparing for an encore in 2008. The Demon Deacons opened fall workouts this week at Hooks Stadium.

"It was encouraging to see just about every guy came out in great shape," said fourth-year head coach Rick Rembielak. "They were ready to go. The enthusiasm the players have shown so far has been superb. Everything has gone very smoothly the first few days of practice. Now our main objective is to get in the systems of both offense and defense."

Rembielak returns a wealth of experience from last year's squad that finished runner-up at the ACC Tournament. In all 24 players are back from last season, including all nine positional starters.

The pitching staff is no different with each of the Deacons' top six starters returning.

"I think having returning players makes the daily routine go smoother because they know what the expectations are, they know the system and they can help being a second coach," said Rembielak. "You don't necessarily need to take a lot of time to explain things to everybody. You've got other hands involved.

"Those upperclassmen know the systems. What we really want to do is get as many reps in for the younger guys as possible. The older guys don't have to take all the reps because they know it. We just have to end up educating the young guys."

Wake Forest's fall workouts will culminate with the annual Black & Gold World Series in mid-October. The final game of the series is slated for Oct. 19.
