WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 23 Wake Forest women's soccer team had several quality shots, but after 110 minutes the Demon Deacons had to settle for a draw against No. 4 Virginia in ACC action at Spry Stadium Sunday afternoon.
"It leaves you with an empty feeling," Wake Head Coach Tony da Luz said. "It was a great game and we had great opportunities. It was a brilliant team effort overall and to still come up 0-0 is frustrating."
In the first half, Wake (6-3-2, 1-0-1) limited the Cavaliers (7-1-2, 1-0-1) to two shots with no shots on goal. WFU senior Laura Colven had the first Deacon shot on goal in the 15th minute, but UVA goalkeeper Chantel Jones surged forward to meet the ball for the first of her five saves during the contest.
Wake sophomore Sarah Winslow had two quality shots in the second half, including a spectacular run in the 73rd minute. Winslow dodged two Virginia defenders to fire a missile from 18-yards out that came within inches of the net. The narrow miss on Virginia's Jones, who hasn't allowed a goal against UVA through the Cavaliers' last five matches, caused Winslow to fall to her knees in frustration.
"It's disappointing," Winslow said. "But I know my shots are improving."
Allie Sadow charged the Virginia goal in the 84th minute, colliding with Jones at the 19-yard line. Both athletes battled for possession from the ground until UVA's redshirt-freshman keeper finally grabbed the ball.
"Welcome to the ACC Chantel," ACC Select play-by-play announcer Evan Lepler said jokingly after the collision.
Winslow teamed up with Sadow in the 87th minute to make Wake's final offensive run of regulation. Sadow found an open Winslow at the 30-yard mark but the long-range shot gave Jones plenty of time to make the save.
After five saves and 100 minutes from goalkeeper Laura Morse, da Luz subbed in freshman Amanda Barasha to take advantage of her powerful long range kicks. With in the first two minutes of the final OT, Barasha gained possession and sent the ball flying over 70 yards into Virginia territory.
"Laura did a great job, I just thought we could use Amanda as a weapon during the last ten minutes. She can really hit a ball," da Luz said.
After a blocked Virginia shot in the 109th minute, the Deacs had one last run at the UVA goal. The Cavaliers knocked the ball out of bounds three times before Jill Hutchinson found herself with the ball at the 14-yard line. Surrounded by UVA defenders, Hutchinson was helpless to manage any type of quality shot and the game ended there at 0-0.
"It was great game," da Luz said. "Yeah, we would have liked a win, but the team's performance today definitely bodes well for the future."
The Deacons will continue ACC action October 5 as they face Maryland in College Park, Md.
