Deacons Host ITA Regional October 22-27

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest will host the 2008 ITA Southeast Regional Tournament at the Indoor Tennis Center October 22-27. The event will feature competition from 26 schools across the Southeast.

Matches will open on Wednesday with two rounds of singles prequalifying play, scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. The top four finishers from the draw will advance to the qualifying round of 32 which begins Thursday morning. Eight winners will continue on in the main singles draw of 64. There is also a doubles draw of 64 that will begin play later in the week.

At the end of each day a new schedule of play will be posted on Wake Forest's Tournament Central website. Draws will also be updated on the site periodically throughout the day. The event will wrap up on Monday with the final two rounds of main draw doubles and singles.

North Carolina's Sanaz Marand is the highest ranked singles athlete in the tournament, coming in 10th in the ITA's preseason poll. Marand earned the No. 1 seed in main draw singles and begins action against Charlotte's Yudeshree Pilay in the round of 64.

In doubles, Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor hold the draw's top seed and will begin competition in the round of 32 against the winner of the Anna Milian/Page Kensrue (Elon) and Anna Novo/Emilia Milovanovic (USC Upstate) matchup.

Wake Forest will play six athletes from the Demon Deacon roster, including junior Sasha Kulikova, who was seeded eighth in the singles main draw and will face Laura Kriett of Gardner Webb in the opening round. Other Deacons in the main draw include Christian Tara, who will face 9-seed Sventlana Pimenova of Eastern Kentucky, Emilee Malvehey, who will take on UNC's Shinnan Featherston, and Sierra Poske, who opens with Christine Johnston of Kentucky.

In the qualifying singles draw, Katarina Reveche will meet Jocelyn Ffriend in the first round. Ryann Cutillo will team up with Reveche in doubles, receiving a bye in the first round.
