WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Doesn't it feel good to be home? The Wake Forest volleyball team returned to Reynolds Gymnasium Friday night after dropping its last four road matches and got solid performances all across the board to sweep Boston College.
The win (25-9, 25-22, 25-13) snapped a four-match losing skid for the Deacons and pulls them back to .500 in the conference at 5-5 and 14-8 overall. Boston College falls to 6-16 overall and remains winless in the conference at 0-10.
Junior Sally Fischer has slowly worked her way into the rotation this season and tonight, she shined, recording a career-high five service aces. She was also just one dig short of a career-high with seven.
On a night when she was honored for setting the school's career total blocks record, graduate student Natalie Mullikin showed why she just may be the school's best blocker as she recorded a total of six blocks, including three block solos.
Mullikin also led the Deacs with a team-high nine kills and hit a solid .368. As a team, Wake hit .250 for the match and a significant part of that came from sophomore Lauren McIntyre, who recorded seven kills on nine attempts, with no errors for a .778 hitting percentage.
Freshman Kadija Fornah chipped in with eight kills while senior Ashley Homitz added three.
Sophomore setter Kelsey Jones dished out 28 assists and junior Abby Miller led the Wake defense with 12 digs.
A total of 12 Demon Deacons saw action this evening, including redshirt sophomore Kate Rodriguez, who collected her first kill of the season.
Jordan Meredith led the Eagles with a match-high 10 kills and Brittany Pierpont dished out 20 assists.
The first set could not have gone any better for the Deacons as they used just one rotation to build a 21-7 lead. Wake jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and extended it to 14-7 before a 7-0 run, sparked by a kill from Mullikin, open up a 21-7 advantage. Mullikin added a pair of blocks during the run and closed the spurt with two more kills.
The Deacons would roll to an easy 25-9 victory in the first set. Wake hit a solid .308 in the opening stanza while the Demon Deacon defense forced BC into eight errors and a -.097 hitting percentage.
BC played much better in the second hit, hitting a respectable .211. The Eagles came out swinging and didn't miss this time, grabbing a 10-8 lead. BC eventually opened up a 15-12 lead before a kill from McIntyre and back-to-back service aces from Fischer pulled the Deacs even at 15-15.
The score would stay close throughout the rest of the set as the teams were tied a total of ten times. With BC leading 21-20, Fornah knotted the score with her third kill of the set but the Eagles would regain the lead on an attack error by Homitz.
The senior would atone for her miscue on the very next point to even the set once again at 22-22. After an attack error by the Eagles force them to take a timeout, Fischer again toed the service line and nailed a crucial ace giving the Deacs a two-point advantage at 24-22.
McIntyre would take a set from Jones and finish the game with her fourth kill of the set. McIntyre was 4-for-5 on attack attempts in the set and Fischer totaled three service aces.
Wake clearly had the momentum coming out the break and ran out to a commanding 14-5 lead. The Deacons would again use just one rotation to this time build a 21-9 lead thanks to a 5-0 and a 6-0 run in the middle of the set.
BC cut the deficit to nine at 22-13 but Rodriguez's kill and back-to-back errors from the Eagles would give the Deacs the 25-13 victory.
Wake held BC to just a .040 hitting percentage on the night and the Eagles tallied 22 errors compared to just 11 for the Deacs.
The Demon Deacons will look to make it six straight wins at home as they host Maryland Saturday evening at 5 p.m. The match will be the Deacon's 3rd annual Dig For a Cure match with proceeds going to benefit the Susan G. Komen Fund for breast cancer research.
