WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 3 Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the Richmond Spiders 6-3 at Kentner Stadium Sunday afternoon.
It was a season-high outing in scoring for Wake Forest, who now stands at 10-2 for the year. The Deacons last netted six or more goals in September of 2007, when they took a 6-1 win over Radford. The Spiders are 3-8 for 2008 play.
Senior Michelle Kasold wasted no time and scored just over 80 seconds into the contest on the first shot of the match. Hilary Moore picked up an assist on the play.
Statistically speaking, Wake Forest dominated the first half, out-shooting the Spiders 14-2 and picking up six penalty corners while Radford had none. But the Spiders were able to capitalize on the few times they had possession of the ball, scoring two goals on just two shots during the opening 35 minutes. Adrian Pickar and Dani Pycroft had goals for Richmond in the first half.
Senior Liz Fries scored on a penalty corner with one second left before halftime to give the Deacons a 3-2 advantage.
Moore and Kasold teamed up for a second time to net Wake Forest's fourth goal against the Spiders. Kasold sent the ball from the bottom left of the scoring circle to Moore who was waiting in the center and slipped it past Richmond goalkeeper Jacki Raithel.
Sarah Blythe-Wood scored Richmond's final goal on the team's only penalty corner of the match. Wake Forest followed with two goals from penalty corners, including the final goal with just seconds left in regulation.
Next weekend Wake Forest is headed to Evanston, Ill. to play Michigan State at Northwestern on October 11 and Northwestern on October 12. Wake Forest will wrap up the home portion of the schedule on October 15 and 19, playing Radford and California.
