WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest volleyball head coach Heather Kahl Holmes announced Friday that two recruits, Andrea Beck and Megan Carnell, have both signed National Letters of intent to join the Wake Forest volleyball team starting in the fall of 2009.
"We are extremely excited for Andrea and Megan to join the Wake Forest Volleyball Family," said Kahl Holmes. "They fully understand and respect the commitment it takes to be successful academically and athletically. We are looking forward to them joining us in the fall of 2009."
Beck is a local product from nearby Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. She is a 6'1" middle blocker and has played the last three seasons with the Player's Edge Junior Olympic Volleyball Club.
She was also a member of the USA Volleyball Junior National A2 Team and was named one of Prepvolleyball.com's "Senior Aces."
While at Mount Tabor, Beck was a two-time member of the Central Piedmont All-Conference Team and was named the Conference Player of the Year as a senior. She also earned All-Region honors in 2006 and was a four-year varsity letter winner for the Spartans.
In addition to her standout success on the volleyball court, Beck was a state champion in the 4x400-meter relay for the Mount Tabor track team and was a three-year state qualifier for the Spartan swimming team.
"Andrea an incredible student-athlete that we were fortunate enough to find in our hometown," Kahl Holmes said. "She is a great blocker, whose quickness, leaping ability and passion for the game will only contribute to her continued success at the college level. She has trained and played for one of North Carolina's finest high school coaches, Robyn Wesselman at Mount Tabor; along with competing with the countries best juniors this past summer in Tuscon, Ariz."
Carnell is 6'2" setter from North Gwinnett High School in Suawanee, Ga. She plays for the PLA Volleyball Club and trained the last three summers with the A1 USA alternates.
At North Gwinnett High School, Carnell is a scholar athlete as well as a three-time All-County player, including earning first team honors as both a junior and a senior. She was also named to the 2008 All-Area team and was elected team captain each of the last two seasons.
Carnell earned four varsity letters in volleyball and has also earned a pair of letters in basketball. She earned the team's Coach's Award and was named the team's Most Valuable Player each of the last two seasons for her efforts on the hardwood.
"Megan is a very talented, athletic and agile setter who not only gives us depth to our setter position, but she also adds versatility to the team make up by playing the outside/right side positions as well," Kahl Holmes said. "She has been fortunate to grow up in a family where her mother played volleyball competitively at the Division 1 level, and has been her coach throughout her young career. She immediately understands the commitment it will take to be successful as a student athlete in college."
We are looking forward to Andrea and Megan making an immediate impact on our program's success both athletically and academically, as well as giving back to the community.
