WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior L.D. Williams scored 22 points and freshman Al-Farouq Aminu recorded a double-double to lead No. 21-ranked Wake Forest to a 97-62 win over Mount Olive in the first and only recognized preseason exhibition game for the Demon Deacons on Thursday night at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
Junior Chas McFarland had 12 points and went 6-of-6 from the field, while sophomore Jeff Teague notched 12 assists.
The freshmen also made an immediate impact. Aminu grabbed 12 rebounds and had 15 points in the Deacon victory, and Tony Woods totaled 15 points.
The 6,106-person crowd in attendance witnessed 15 Wake Forest dunks, including four by Williams and Woods.
From the tipoff, the Deacons demonstrated why they were in the preseason polls for the first time since 2005, converting on their first possession with McFarland's dunk eight seconds into the game.
Mount Olive grabbed an early lead twice on three-pointers by Kendrick Easley, who led the Trojans with 15 points, at 17:24 and 14:00 left in the first half.
However, redshirt junior David Weaver's dunk with 12:31 remaining in the first period put the Deacons up 16-14, a lead which they would never relinquish.
One of the largest cheers of the night came on a Williams' dunk which brought the score to 39-14 with 7:08 left in the first half. McFarland stole the ball at midcourt, jumping up to tip it and then saving the ball from going out-of-bounds with a behind-the-back pass to Teague, who found Williams for the two-handed dunk.
Wake Forest went on a 38-16 run at the end of the first half, capped by back-to-back Williams' dunks.
The Trojans were not able to cut into the Deacons' 24-point halftime lead at all in the second period, as 14 Wake Forest student-athletes recorded playing time in the exhibition game.
Junior Ishmael Smith did not play for Wake Forest due to a foot injury and sophomore James Johnson also sat out the game.
Wake Forest will open the regular season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14, playing host to North Carolina Central.
