Deacons Finish Preseason with 87-45 Win over IUP

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior Corinne Groves netted 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lead the Wake Forest women's basketball team to an 87-45 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the final exhibition game of 2008.
IUP's Eryn Withers posted a team-high 11 points for the Crimson Hawks and Jahzinga Tracey led the team with six assists.
Secily Ray and Brittany Waters each added 11 points to the Demon Deacon total, while Sarah Riddle and Brittany Waters each had six boards for WFU.
Just over ten minutes into the game Wake Forest gained a 10 point lead and began to pile on the points from there. With five minutes before the half, Wake Forest added 13 unanswered points to gain a 27 point lead. IUP's Lacey Claar added a basket for the Crimson Hawks just before halftime buzzer to set the score at 44-19.
Foul trouble hit both teams by the end of the second half. Wake Forest entered a double bonus situation with six minutes to play, but IUP shot just 40 percent from the charity strip in the half to allow the Deacons to maintain a decisive lead. Wake Forest was 70 percent from the free throw line overall and 76 percent for the final 20 minutes.
Off the bench, Brooke Thomas, Courteney Morris and Secily Ray all logged 17 minutes or more and netted a total 24 points for the Deacons. Post player Sarah Riddle had a strong showing, adding six points and six rebounds through nine minutes.
Wake Forest will begin the regular season on November 17, hosting UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. in the Joel Coliseum.
