WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Graduate student Natalie Mullikin was named ESPN The Magazine second team Academic All-District for volleyball on Thursday. Mullikin earned the distinction for the second straight season.
Mullikin received her bachelors degree last May and is in her first semester in the graduate program for Management. Not only has she been a leader in the classroom, the Lebanon, Ind., native has also played a large roll on the court this season.
She currently leads the team in both blocking and attacking, notching 294 kills and 101 total blocks. Her 3.34 kills per set have her ranked fifth in the ACC and she is bettering her career average, which is impressive because of the shorter sets.
Mullikin has also been a wall at the net this season. She is averaging 1.15 blocks per set and is just 10 block assists shy of becoming the school's all-time leading blocker. She recently surpassed Margaret Davidson's school record for career total blocks and is already the school record holder for career block solos.
She opened the season with a strong showing at the Deacon Invitational and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Mullikin has notched double-digit kills in 19 of 26 matches this season and is hitting an impressive .325. She posted a solid weekend against Virginia and Virginia Tech on Oct, 17 and 19, collecting a total of 35 kills in the two matches.
Mullikin has earned Academic All-ACC honors each of the last two seasons and has been a member of the Dean's List during her entire career at Wake.
Mullikin and the rest of the Demon Deacons enter an important weekend of action as they host the ACC's top two teams. Wake will take on Georgia Tech on Friday night at 7 p.m. and host Clemson at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
