WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest field hockey head coach Jennifer Averill was named the 2008 National Field Hockey Coaches Association South Region Coach of the Year. During the season Averill was also tabbed Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year by her conference colleagues.

In 2008, Averill guided her team to a 22-8 record, tying the program record for most wins in a season. The Deacons pulled off the accomplishment with one of the most strenuous schedules in the nation, ranking second in the NCAA's RPI category.

The Deacons wrapped up the season with their ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Final Four and topped Syracuse in an overtime contest to move on to the finals. Wake Forest then fell to Maryland in the season finale.

Wake Forest placed four athletes on the 2008 All-ACC Team as well as seven athletes on the NFHCA All-Region Team. Michelle Kasold, Aileen Davis, Raisa Schiller and Minou Gimbrere also earned All-American status from the NFHCA.

The NFHCA National Coach of the Year honor will be announced in mid-January.
