WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 30 Wake Forest women's tennis team is set for a challenging weekend with road contests against No. 28 Clemson and third-ranked, defending National Champion Georgia Tech.
The Demon Deacons are the only Atlantic Coast Conference squad that holds an undefeated league record, standing 4-0 in the ACC and 8-5 overall.
When the Tigers (2-3, 6-9) last took the court, the squad upset ninth-ranked Duke with a decisive 6-1 victory in Durham, N.C. Clemson's top weapon is sophomore Ani Mijacika, who ranks second in the nation and was named ACC Player of the Week for her winning performance against three top ten opponents last week.
Clemson has taken victories in the last seven matchups with the Demon Deacons. WFU's last win was at the 2002 NCAA Regional Championships in Winston-Salem.
After opening the season 2-1, Georgia Tech (11-4, 3-1) breezed through the ITA Indoor Tournament, shutting out early round opponents Wisconsin and Georgia before posting wins over Stanford and Northwestern to take the tourney title.
In conference play, the Yellow Jackets have 6-1 wins over Clemson and Miami in addition to a 5-2 victory over North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Last weekend, the Blue Devils became the first team to botch GT's perfect record, posting a 4-3 upset in Durham.
Three Tech players rank in the ITA's Top 30, including No. 4 Amanda McDowell, No. 6 Kristi Miller and No. 29 Maya Johansson.
Next week, the Demon Deacons will hit the road once again for three Tobacco Road matchups, beginning with Duke on April 3, North Carolina on April and concluding with NC State on April 6.
