Four Demon Deacons Named to All-ACC Academic Baseball Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team placed four players on the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team as announced Friday morning by ACC Commissioner John D. Swofford.

Allan Dykstra (Jr., San Diego, Calif.), Andy Goff (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.), Ben Hunter (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Charlie Mellies (Sr., Clifton, Va.) represented Wake Forest on the team. Dykstra and Goff are on the the team for the third time in their careers, while Hunter is making his second appearance.

Dykstra, a rising senior first baseman, has enjoyed a stellar career as a Demon Deacon. A two-time All ACC selection, Dykstra was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft. In 2008, Dykstra led the Deacs with a .323 batting average, 16 home runs and 50 RBIs. Dykstra is a business major.

Goff, a senior shortstop in 2008, played in 214 games at Wake Forest, starting in 212 of them. Goff hit .279 with 24 RBIs and 30 runs scored in 2008 and finished his career on a personal-best 13-game hitting streak. Goff recently signed a free agent contract with the Colorado Rockies. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native graduated with a degree in Communication.

Hunter, a senior starting pitcher in 2008, was also recently drafted in the 2008 MLB Draft. Hunter was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 29th round. A native of Cincinnati, Hunter finished the 2008 season with a 4-6 record and a 5.00 ERA. He led the team in strikeouts with 82.

Hunter was named to the 2008 CoSIDA Academic All-District III second team and was also selected as a 2007-08 ACC Postgraduate Scholar. Hunter graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology with a chemistry minor.

Mellies, a senior starting pitcher in 2008, was a first team selection to the 2008 Lowe's All-Senior All-America Team. He started 14 games in 2008, compiling a 4-5 record with a 4.57 ERA in a team-high 90.2 innings pitched. Mellies fanned 68 batters in 2008 against only 17 walks. A three-year starter, Mellies closed his career with three straight complete games. Mellies graduated cum laude with a double major in political science and sociology.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 GPA for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Florida State and Duke led the league with six selections each. Maryland placed five members on the team, while Clemson and Virginia joined Wake Forest with four players selected.
