WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The professional baseball season is in the early stages of the second half. Below is a recap of how former Wake Forest baseball players are doing in the pros over the past couple of weeks.
Matt Antonelli (2004-06) - Playing second base for the Portland Beavers, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres in the Pacific Coast League ... Currently hitting .199 with three home runs and 28 RBIs in 97 games ... Second on the team in doubles with 16 and third in runs scored with 45 ... Had two hits with a run scored and an RBI in Portland's 12-8 victory over Nashville (7/29).
Ryan Braun (2000-02) - Hard-throwing reliever for the Kansas City Royals, who underwent reconstructive elbow surgery earlier this year and is out for the season ... In the previous two seasons, he appeared in 35 games for the Royals with a 6.66 ERA and 2-1 record ... Assigned this spring to Triple-A Omaha but never pitched before undergoing surgery.
Dave Bush (1999-2002) - Currently a starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers ... Has a 5-8 record with a 4.51 ERA in 19 games, including 18 starting appearances ... Recorded 71 strikeouts and only 26 walks in 111.2 innings ... Allowed four runs on nine hits in five innings pitched in last outing against Houston (7/26).
Jamie D'Antona (2001-03) - Currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks ... Called up by Arizona on July 22 and made his major league debut later that night against the Chicago Cubs with a pinch-hit single ... Hitting .250 in four at-bats with the Diamondbacks ... Was enjoying a breakout season at Triple-A Tucson, hitting .367 with 31 doubles, 17 home runs and 67 RBIs when called up.
Josh Ellis (2004-07) - Currently a relief pitcher for the Visalia Oaks in the Single-A Advanced California League ... Called up to Triple-A Tucson on July 9 ... Made two appearances for Tucson, allowing no runs and one hit in three innings pitched, while striking out four ... Sent back down to Visalia on July 14 ... Has compiled a 2-2 record and six saves with a 1.90 ERA in 28 games for Visalia ... Threw two scoreless innings against Rancho Cucamonga (7/26), giving up only one hit and striking out two.
Andy Goff (2004-08) - Shortstop for the Casper Ghosts in the Rookie-level Pioneer League ... Hitting .179 with four RBIs and four runs scored in 13 games ... Went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI against Missoula (7/16).
Mike MacDougal (1997-99) - Relief pitcher for the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox ... Started the season in the majors with the White Sox and threw 8.2 innings and allowed two earned runs and struck out seven ... Joined the Knights on April 26 and has an 0-3 record and four saves with a 4.68 ERA in 28 appearances ... Has not allowed a run during his last four outings ... Struck out the side in only inning of work against Louisville (7/29).
Eric Niesen (2005-07) - Starting pitcher for the St. Lucie Mets in the Single-A Advanced Florida State League ... Currently has a 5-10 record with a 4.41 ERA in 20 appearances, including 19 starting nods ... Picked up his fifth win of the season against Fort Myers (7/21), throwing six innings and allowing one run on four hits and striking out three ... Received a no decision in start against Jupiter (7/26), but pitched well, throwing six scoreless innings and giving up eight hits.
Cory Sullivan (2000-01) - Recalled to the major leagues by Colorado on July 29 ... Has spent most of the season as an outfielder for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox ... Hitting .306 with six home runs and 40 RBIs on the season at Triple A ... Tied for the team lead in doubles with 28 and second on the team in runs scored with 61 ... Went 2-for-5 and scored two runs in win over New Orleans (7/22).
