WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Allie Sadow scored in the eighth minute of the first overtime to lift the 21st-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Utah in the season opener for both teams.

"I thought we dictated the play from the beginning to the end," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We got caught ball watching on the goal that they scored. We had a great response after that goal and we had most of the game under control."

Much of the contest was spent on the Wake Forest end of the field. The Deacons out-shot Utah 21-6, although both teams only managed two shots on goal. Wake Forest had eight corner kicks compared to just one for the Utes.

After the teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, senior midfielder Amy Smerdzinski played a perfect ball, which found junior Allie Sadow in the box. Sadow fired from seven yards out and beat the diving Utah goalkeeper to seal the season-opening win for the Demon Deacons.

"Amy made a perfect play," da Luz said. "Allie made a great run across the top of the box and made a superb finish. It was good for us to go into overtime and win a game like this."

Utah scored first in the game at the 11:54 mark. Kelly Isleib received a cross in the box nine yards outside the goal. Isleib sent the ball just inside the right post to give the Utes a 1-0 advantage. Katy Reineke and Lauren Hair added assists on the play.

Wake Forest answered back just under seven minutes later. Kaley Fountain played a long ball into the attacking third of the field, which found Jill Hutchinson. Hutchinson fired a short from just outside the box, which deflected off the keeper and bounced into the net to even the score at one at halftime.

The majority of the second half saw Wake Forest attacking the Utah net. The Deacs had a great chance to score in the 76th minute. Bianca D'Agostino sent a corner kick into the box. Jill Hutchinson got a head on the ball and it went off the cross bar and away.

In the 89th minute, the Deacs had a free kick opportunity from just outside the box. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Barasha took the kick, but the ball sailed high and wide of the net.

Barasha picked up the win for the Deacons in goal, making one save on the evening and allowing the one goal.

Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, August 29, when the team travels to Florence, S.C., to take on Francis Marion. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (ET).
