GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore setter Kelsey Jones has been named ACC Volleyball Co-Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Jones shares the honor with Florida State's Brianna Barry.
Jones, who is the first Demon Deacon to earn the weekly award this season, led Wake Forest to a 3-0 record and a tournament title at the Black & Gold Challenge last weekend. The Ada, Mich. native dished out a total of 127 assists and averaged better than two digs per set over the three matches en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In the Deacons' first match against Western Michigan, Jones recorded her fourth double-double of the season and the 18th of her career with a season-high 53 assists and 13 digs. She also recorded a pair of kills and three block assists in the five-set win over the Broncos.
Jones notched another 32 assists against East Carolina in the first match on Saturday then capped the tournament with a 42 assist, eight dig performance against Delaware.
For the weekend, Jones averaged 11.55 assists per set and 2.18 digs per set. She also read the opposing defenses well as 43 percent of her total set attempts went for kills.
Jones, who was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team last year, is currently second in the ACC with 335 assists and 10.47 assists per set. She is also tied for second on the team with 83 digs and 2.59 digs per set.
This is the first time Jones has earned ACC Player of the Week honors in her young career and she is the first Deacon to win the award since Jessica Furlong on Nov. 6, 2006.
Jones and the Deacons (6-3) will wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule this weekend at the Appalachian State Tournament. Wake will take on host Appalachian State Friday night at 7 p.m. before playing Charlotte at 10 a.m. and North Carolina A&T at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
